100-mile Potluck

Eating locally offers the potential for fresher, tastier food; less
fossil fuel used for each calorie eaten; a stronger local economy;
preservation of farmland and open space; and stronger communities.

What is “local?” Many groups have used a 100-mile radius to define the local
“foodshed” of their community. Why? It is a nice round number and is
certainly closer than the 1500 miles that food travels on average in
the United States from field to plate.

The 77 Kentucky counties located within 100 miles of Berea have about 7.5 million acres
in farms and more than two billion dollars of agricultural sales
annually. Surely we can find something good to eat within this circle.

So join your neighbors on August 19 with your potluck dish prepared with
ingredients produced within 100 miles of Berea. On a half-sheet of
paper, write the recipe and the source of each ingredient. These will
be posted during the dinner (and afterwards on the Sustainable Berea
website), and there will be prizes for the dishes that best illustrate
the potential for local eating in Berea.
