Addressing technical & web support issues

My apologies for hitting you all with two topics on the same day (especially when so many of you are already feeling overwhelmed by emails!), but I wanted to address some of the more pressing and common technical issues people are having and to ask for your feedback on an important site question.

Technical/Web Support Issues

  • Issues emailing to coordinate@. A number of people have told us they can’t reply to the mailing list. What we’ve found in most cases is that this is due to people attempting to email the list from an email address not associated with their account. This is an understandable confusion, particularly if you have multiple email accounts that you read through clients like Microsoft Outlook or you have mail aliases. Therefore, if you are experiencing this issue, please visit your account page to be sure to which email address your subscription belongs. To do this, see our FAQ here. Whenever you email or respond to coordinate@, please be sure you are sending from the right address. If you are still experiencing issues, however, let us know.
  • Changing Mailing List Subscription. If you would like to change how often you are receiving emails from the mailing list, please see detailed instructions here.
  • Cleaning Up Forum Threads. We understand that one of the draw backs of the mailing list is that the entire discussion thread gets reposted on the web site with each individual reply. This can make the forums extremely long and cumbersome to read. We are looking into developing a way to minimize these. But in the meantime, I’m sure everyone else would really appreciate it if you took the time to delete the existing thread from your email when you reply.
  • Log in Issues. A couple of you have expressed issues when you log in, specifically that you are asked to create a new password each time you visit the site. Our technical team is looking at this issue as we speak (I won’t bore you with the technical acrobatics involved).
  • Other technical/web support issues. We’ve set up a specific email address for all technical issues or web support questions: websupport at relocalize dot net. Please feel free to email us at this address if you encounter any issues or need assistance. Emailing to this address will help us respond more quickly.

Forum Privacy

We’ve received a number of questions and complaints about privacy in group forums. Without belaboring the point, there are is no perfect solution in establishing privacy rules for groups: Making groups more private makes it more difficult and thus less likely for new members to join. Making groups less private makes it more difficult for members to speak candidly, thus making it more challenging to share information and make members feel confident they are in a trusted space.

Based on all the input we’ve received, we’d like to recommend that we make all group forums private from now on. This would allow groups to maintain an area that they could be sure was private and secure for their members (we are working right now to make sure that the “Recent Comments” box on the homepage does not include comments from private forums), while still having the ability to make other areas (events, blogs, news, etc) public.

But before taking any steps, we’d like to hear from you. Do you wish to keep your group’s forums public?

Thanks,

Asher

re: Addressing technical & web support issues

Speaking for SustainaBundy, we definitely do not want our forums private. As an extremely active group, it is important that people who learn about us for the first time are able to see what we're up to and follow the conversations, regardless of whether they subscribe or not.

Re: Addressing technical & web support issues - reaching a conse

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your responses about the mailing list/forum issues and "reply-to" settings.
It is clear that the forums will need to operate in different ways for different groups in regards to private vs. public configurations. We won't go ahead with anything until we get as close as we can to a consensus. We'll be looking into possible ways of controlling privacy settings on a per-group basis, and will keep you updated.

Just to let you all know also, Asher is away this week with family will be returning on Monday, April 21st. If you have any immediate questions or concerns, feel free to email team @ relocalize . net
Tim Gravenites is assisting with web support related issues and questions can be directed to websupport @ relocalize . net.

The April Relocalize Newsletter will be rolling out shortly so watch out for that!

In lieu of Earth Day (April 22nd), I'll be sending out a separate post this week full of resources for organizing events and various projects.

Best,
Shelby

Hi Shelby
I assume you are aware of Transitioning towns. http://transitionnetwork.org/Primer/TransitionInitiativesPrimer.pdf I think it is a great model.

The NAG (Notifier About Goofs)

Hi, Folks;
It's nothing personal but it seems I'm going to be the self-appointed nag on this list about certain technical and communication protocols until we train ourselves to use this medium in its most effective and considerate way. Apologies about that but:

Therefore - PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE!

If we are trying to be conscious about our role in sharing information and educating people, it helps for each of us to attend to those small, but important, tasks that facilitate our process, saves time and thereby demonstrates consideration for those of us on the list whose time is extremely precious (that would probably be ALL of us!)

Many thanks,

Steve Hamm

Hi Andy,

I am printing a brochure and need a quote from someone who liked the course and would recommend it.  I know you recommend it so could you write 2 sentences saying what it did for you?

Shortcomings of Current Transition Plans

Picking up on Henry's comment on the Transition Plan, in my
experience, no transition primer that I've seen has done a good job
addressing core infrastructure issues.

Here in our county, we have 900 miles of water pipeline, some of
which is over 100 years old. We are currently replacing just 1% per
year of the leakiest/oldest segments. This needs to accelerate or
people will turn on their taps "soon" and no water will come out. I'm
working with my county to obtain an electronic list of pipe segments
(see attached letter).

I haven't started work on our sewer system but my guess is that it is
in a similar situation.

As for roads, I recommend making a plan to abandon some roads and
divert energy to the main arteries and to consider paving methods that
don't require asphalt. I'm doing work on roads right now. I will post
when it's a little further along. See the chart where it stands
(anyone willing to work with me on this?).

One more thing. The composition of your core peak oil planning group
is very important because that will determine the shape of your plan.
Make sure you have enough engineers on it. If you have mostly urban
planners, you will have the Oakland peak oil plan as a result -- not
terribly useful, in my view. People will move into mini-villages, but
they will not have working water, electricity or sewer systems.

Re: Addressing technical & web support issues

Asher,

I will not try to create new passwords every time I log in. That's insane. I would rather refrain from logging in. I would also like to discover that after these several years I've been online here that the problems would diminish, not increase. That I continue using the site is testament to my fondness for the principle of having such a vehicle, and my inability to create a parallel site like the original TLA (and others) do
I would like to know that the coordinator's hub is only going to coordinators. I didn't know they were any more public than that.

Re: Addressing technical & web support issues

Hi, asher.
Thanks for paying attention to our concerns. I understand that you are doing the work of balancing all concerns.
Here are my requests:1) consider changing the reply-to so that replies go to the author. People would have to go out of their way for something to go to the list. This may cut down on the non-group replies ("Thanks, Jim") that are going out to anyone.2) speaking for Post Carbon Marin, we have no desire to make the forums private. Can that be a switch somewhere for those groups that want it? I want to draw people into the conversation, and that's harder to do if they can't lurk and see the conversation without joining

More suggestions for Addressing technical & web support issues

More suggestions for Addressing technical & web support issues I'm a listserv manager for a number of political, environmental and social listservs, and almost all of those lists are set up to "Reply to Sender". So I second André's suggestion to reply to "Reply to Sender".

Personal responses sent to the whole list, lacking what seem to be concrete suggestions (as have been requested by numerous folks), are best conducted between the two parties engaged in dialogue. Otherwise we all get inundated with stuff that may overload a number of subscribers and cause them to tune out or drop out.

I'd like to add one more suggestion as well:

PLEASE be sensitive to changing the "Subject" line. Once the body of the message changes from something like "This List is Too Busy..." to "You go girl", it helps to let others know there's something in there that might be of greater interest and a different message.

Thanks,

Steve
