Don't reinvent the wheel: here's the perfect opportunity for SustainaBundy to get involved with an existing initiative that overlaps with our own goals. The Bundaberg Community Garden group is having a meeting this coming Tuesday at the School of Arts building on Bourbong Street - Dean and I will be attending, and we'd like to see other SustainaBundy members that are interested in the community garden concept there too! Christine Trevor is project manager of the Bundaberg Community Garden project, last week she sent me the attached document about the project. Here's the important stuff:
"The concept for the establishment of a Community Garden in Bundaberg was initiated in early 2006 with a small group of interested community members. A public meeting was held in late September to increase interest and awareness of the project followed by a workshop in October (facilitated by Northey St City Farm). The Bundaberg Community Garden Committee is now working on an annual plan for the development of the garden. Average attendance at these meetings is ten people. However a larger group has expressed an interest in supporting the garden and 20 people are kept informed of progress via email.
Vision
To have a sustainable, self–sufficient organic garden that is accessible to all members of our community.
Mission
The Bundaberg Community Garden Group will work together to foster community interaction in a friendly and supportive environment to educate people of all ages on the benefits of community organic gardens and healthy eating
Goals
· To attain accessible land to develop a community garden
· To seek resources to support the development of the garden
· To use organic principles to grow produce and fruit
· To provide opportunities for various groups in our community to participate in sustainable organic food production
· To educate and entertain all people in growing, sustaining and caring for the environment
· To promote a way of life that includes growing, celebrating, eating and sharing healthy food
· To collaborate within our group and community to achieve our goals"
Hope we see you all there - please contact me if you plan to attend so we can go together!
