China Blue

Like no other film before, China Blue is a powerful and poignant journey into the harsh world of sweatshop workers. Shot clandestinely, this is a deep-access account of what both China and the international retailers don't want us to see: how the clothes we buy are actually made.

Following a pair of denim jeans from birth to sale, China Blue links the power of the U.S. consumer market to the daily lives of a Chinese factory owner and two teenaged female factory workers. Filmed both in the factory and in the workers' faraway village, this documentary provides a rare, human glimpse at China's rapid transformation into a free market society.

About Cinema Politica:

http://www.cinemapolitica.org/

Cinema Politica is a project organized by Montreal-based non-profit überculture , and comprises a network of several local film exhibition series across Canada, Europe and the USA. The Canadian component of the network has nearly 20 locals, most of which are located on college and university campuses and is co-sponsored by CitizenShift . überculture is committed to challenging and resisting the corporatization of culture and Cinema Politica is a project that creates pluralistic and inclusive democratic spaces on campuses, where admission is always by donation and everyone is welcome to participate.

Cinema Politica's main objective is to promote, disseminate, exhibit and promote the discussion of political cinema by independent artists, with an emphasis on Canadian works. All pieces that are screened are political works - they represent cinema texts that engage an audience on important socio-political, cultural, environmental and economic issues that are provocative in challenging dominant ideologies and accepted norms. Exhibited works innovative and seek to educate, entertain and especially inspire audiences to participate in openly democratic practices. Emphasis is placed on works that tell stories underrepresented by mainstream media, including narratives around minority struggles within Canada, or gender and sexual identity for example. The position of the artist in society is taken into account in the curatorial process, with a focus on artists who are marginalized and/or struggle with oppression.

Of all the cultural industries in Canada, cinema has the lowest percentage of Canadian content at the mainstream or commercial level. The Canadian Film and Television Production Association and Canadian Heritage reports that in 2006 Canadian film represented a mere 4.4% of screen space in Canadian theatres (and there is certainly no shortage of works, the Canadian submissions to Hot Docs 2007 totaled 222 documentary films and videos alone). Cinema Politica is a project rooted in the belief that diversity and plurality in culture, media and the arts builds stronger publics and leads to increased democratic practices by engendering social inclusion and participation while educating audiences.

The relevance of this one

Hi everyone,

As Cory ("elleprovocateur") has pointed out to me, one reason this film is relevant here is because it makes a case for buying local. The products made in China are often bought in North America, of course. Many of the sweatshop labourers in China are basically Wal-Mart employees.

The film also relates to how Chinese energy demands and carbon emissions are shooting up, and how a lot of carbon and energy are used to ship materials and products to and from China.

Besides, Post-Carbon London is partnering with the local CoC chapter on other screenings:

This China Blue posting is related to those other ones.
