Complete Streets

The streets of our cities and towns ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. Unfortunately, too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars and lack safety elements to protect other non-motorized users. Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. COMPLETE STREETS are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users.
Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and bus riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street.
Joshua will discuss successful Complete Streets projects from around the US and address ways to introduce Complete Streets concepts into local planning projects.

Joshua Poppel is the Executive Director of the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC), having worked with the statewide advocacy organization since the beginning of 2005. NYBC's mission is to provide a coherent, credible voice for the interests of all bicyclists and pedestrians in the state and to promote bicycling and walking as viable and safe forms of transportation. NYBC is currently working with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) to bring Share the Road material to driver's education teachers. The goal of this training is to make New York's roadways safer for bicyclists and pedestrians through increased educational programming for motor-vehicle drivers.

Joshua has a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the State University of New York at Albany has also worked for the Vermont Agency of Transportation in their Bicycle and Pedestrian Program. He is a certified Cycling Instructor through the League of American Bicyclists and has also completed the National Safe Routes to School training offered by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center.
