Next Weekly Planning Mtg. for April 27/28 Lane County Relocalization Conference

Jan 30th planning meeting for April 27/28 Lane County Relocalization Conference
[we need more WOMEN organizers here!]

2 key topics for the next meeting:

1. Complete the Saturday and overall agenda
2. Review the Big Picture – Ok’d but Ravi and Will wanted to know better what is meant by “Big Picture”

The meeting will adjourn by 12:30, and is followed by organizer's presentation til 1:30[?]

January 23, 2007 meeting notes

In attendance: Ravi, Krishna, Guy, Jan, Doug and Joshua

- An agenda for the meeting was worked out.
- The first Item was the status of the venue and insurance for the event. The status of Whiteaker school was in question being Maggie’s department. Jan reported that event insurance would cost $350 for the day (or year) but had not been pursued. We can’t secure Whiteaker until we have insurance and vice versa. Will noted that New Zone pays $420 a year for its insurance (for a year). It was discussed and Will agreed to pursue New Zone’s insurer and get all the details. Will was to urge Maggie to get the school nailed down within the week.

Guy interjected that he had an education ecovillage video that we might use for promotions or at the event.

Krishna informed us that he was withdrawing from the event due to a longterm planning conflict.

The group then developed a list of possible keynote speaker candidates:

Cylvia Hayes(Guy) - 3E Exec. Dir. Strong activist spirit
Julian Darley(Doug) – Great big picture background kind of a guy, Director of intl. Post Carbon Institute
Daniel Quinn
Jim Maloney at EWEB – Strong figure with lots of experience, got EWEB to support 1/06 Heinberg talk
Jan Van Der Tuin(Jan S.)– Organized many groups including Center for Appropriate Transport
Sandy Aldridge/Dale Lugenbehl(Doug) – Excellent speakers, speak on Simplicity at LCC, elsewhere
Ian Hill (Will) – Biodiesel, excellent speaker, co-founder of Sequential Biofuels
Terry McDonald (Krishna) – St. Vincent de Paul CEO
John Pitney (Jan)– Methodist minister, good speaker
Pam Driscoll(Jan) – Marcola projects

There were a few points about speakers and criteria brought up, Ravi suggested that we discuss keynote selection criteria which he listed on the blackboard:

A local citizen
Has an understanding of what relocalization is about
Gender
Practicing sustainability in some fashion
Relevant experience
Be creative
Tuned in to the pulse of culture change
Have a big picture view

Each candidate was then discussed and the criteria were applied to narrow the field of candidates to the following 5 people:

Cylvia Hayes
Julian Darley
Jim Maloney
Sandy Aldridge/Dale Lugenbehl
John Pitney

What to do next regarding keynote speakers was not spelled out. I suggest the person who proposed the candidate contact the candidate and explore availability and views.

The draft agenda was then discussed. Friday night was done previously and we managed to review the Saturday morning but did not come to any consensus over the draft agenda proposed by Will(the conversation drifted off the subject and Ravi spoke up and said we really needed to follow a thread at our meetings or they become unproductive).

Ravi suggested that we form an agenda and stick to it and Guy proposed that we take the last 5 minutes of each meeting to discuss the agenda for the next meeting. We identified 2 key topics for the next meeting:

1. Complete the Saturday and overall agenda
2. Review the Big Picture – Ok’d but Ravi and Will wanted to know better what is meant by “Big Picture”

Ravi suggested we review which topic to discuss first at the start of the next meeting.

Summary of Action Items –

1. Secure Whitaker School for the venue - Maggie
2. Get insurance info and carrier – Will
3. Contact candidate keynoters - Proposers
4. Complete draft schedule - Will
5. Start thinking about workshop content/speakers - all
6. Develop a one page flyer describing the mission and event– Maggie

The Real Peace Rally, Sunday January 28th

If not you, who?
If not here, where?
If not now, when?

If you can’t come, ask yourself what it is you are taking yourself away for…I’ll bet it can be integrated into this rally.

Tomorrow, Sunday January 28th the real Denver peace rally will take place on the West side of the State Capitol building.

9:00am Peace Rally along with food/clothing drive begins.

11:00am Pot-luck lunch

12:00 Special reading of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” for the children and everyone else.

1:00pm Speech by myself, Patrick Padden

2:00pm until the cows come home: Music, Dancing, and a jolly good time.

The big Denver Peace Rally was today. It came, brought some people together, and then finished. People got cold, hungry, tired of holding their signs and left. They went back to their jobs, their families, and their lives. Thank you to those of you who came out today for we showed that there was indeed an interest in these issues we face today.
Tomorrow we will have another rally but will do it in a manner which will sustain itself until WE solve the problems we are protesting about in the first place. It is time to take responsibility for our lives and stop blaming our government, our industries, or the system. We are our government, we are our industries and we are whatever system we create.
Come out tomorrow. Bring warm cloths and blankets. We’ll keep each other warm. Bring warm drinks and good food; we’ll keep each other well fed and comfortable. Bring musical instruments and energetic spirits and we’ll keep each entertained.
Bring the young, the old, the hungry and the tired and we’ll start taking care of our problems through networking of local services.

Don’t bring your hate Bush signs; don’t bring your hate terrorism signs. We must maximize positive energy if we truly desire to actualize positive change.

If you can’t come, ask yourself what it is you are taking yourself away for…I’ll bet it can be integrated into this rally.

Everyone is welcome, pass this information on to all.

See you tomorrow,
Patrick
