LAST Meeting for Making It Last and the Action Planner

This will be our regular weekly meeting. Our focus will be on the LAST Action Planner
http://relocalize.net/files/LAST%20action%20planner-updated-2007-1128.xl... and assembling specific information for LAST handout sheets for the Making It Last! Sustainability Event that is scheduled for March 21 & 22. These handout sheets will have specific information of one of our Focus Areas on one side and general useful information on the other side that are the highlights from each Focus Area.

Everyone is asked to select 1, 2, or 3 Focus Areas and come to the meeting with information or ideas about that/those area(s). Wi-Fi is available in our meeting room, so bring your laptops if you have Wi-Fi connections capability. As a minimum, Sid & Laura will bring their laptop for us to use in this information gathering process.

We will meet briefly, 5-10 minutes, to discuss general sustainability happenings of the week and then break into specific Focus Area small groups to work on the handout sheets and also to apply this information to the LAST Action Planner.

If we have new people to the group that night, Sid will meet with them separately to orient them to our LAST group and its mission/objectives. This way the group can focus on the tasks at hand while new people get information about our group and its direction.

SustainaBundy Movie Night III: Stuff & Waste night!

WHO: SustainaBundy, working for a sustainable Bundaberg region
WHAT: SustainaBundy Movie Night III: The Story of Stuff and There's No Such Thing As Away: Managing Waste - two short movies (20 mins each) looking at "stuff": how it's made and used, and what happens when we put it in the rubbish. The first shows how "stuff" is extracted, produced, distributed, consumed and disposed of, all over the world. The second is an interview with James Stanfield of Bundaberg Waste Management, looking at what happens to our rubbish and recycling, right here in our own home town. Afterwards we'll talk about all the fun, creative ways we can make Bundy a better place by reducing how much we buy, use and throw away!
WHEN: Wednesday 30th January 2008, 5:30pm
WHERE: School of Arts Building, Bourbong Street
HOW: Gold donation entry - tea, coffee and biscuits will be available
MORE: Please RSVP by calling 4196 0043 or email sustainabundy at gmail dot com

Have fun with less stuff!

How much stuff did you get for Christmas? How much stuff do you buy every day? I mean cheap mp3 players, game consoles and all the other stuff that we buy, use for a little while (till it falls apart or breaks or is replaced by something cooler), then toss in the bin.

All that stuff uses up heaps of resources to make, then goes to the tip, gets buried in a giant hole in the ground, pollutes the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil we grow our food in, and creates greenhouse gas emissions that are messing up the entire planet. Then when the hole in the ground is full, they dig another one and fill it with more stuff.

So how do we cut the cr*p and still have fun? Get out and DO STUFF, instead of BUYING STUFF! Go see a local band. Get some friends together and play a game of footy. Go to the skatepark. Learn to play the piano. Go check out the CD and DVD sections at the library (why buy it new when you can borrow it, free!) While you're there, find a good book to read. Cook an awesome meal for your girlfriend - try to use local produce. Start growing something in your garden that you can eat. Get involved with SustainaBundy!

When you do have to buy stuff, buy second hand first - no extra resources are used for manufacturing and packaging used stuff, and the transport is likely to be hardly anything!

Come to our movie night on the 30th of January to talk more about stuff and how we can have fun with less of it!
