Welcome to this informal association of people joined by concern for the future of our society with its many harmful and unsustainable habits, especially our dependence on fossil-fuel energy. The network seeks to promote more sustainable ways of life, focusing on immediately feasible actions at personal and local levels with emphasis on health and community. The network facilitates sharing of information, ideas, and encouragement through the Internet and local meetings and events in the Peoria area.
We began the group in December 2005 as the "Peoria Area Post-Carbon Outpost" but have now renamed it the "Sustainable Living Network" which we feel is a bit more self-explanatory to the public. We have organized several public showings of "The End of Suburbia" and worked with the Peoria Area World Affairs Council (www.pawac.org) to bring Richard Heinberg to Peoria in April 2006. The event was a considerable success with about 150 people attending and some coverage by local media. In August 2006 and again in 2007 we have presented a table display with the Peak Oil poster (http://www.oilposter.org) and handouts at the Illinois Renewable Energy Fair (http://www.illinoisrenew.org/events/fair.htm).
