Hold a mirror

This is just a quick update. I am seeing a lot of people are reading my blog, but so far I have had very little actual feedback. My curiosity about who you are is burning a hole in my brain. I would love to see more comments- how about just telling me where you are and your general situation, so I can learn more about all of you.

Thanks

Shane

Square Foot Gardening

Something funny is also happening in my SFG. I added mushroom compost to the mix from the local farm and all week I have had the soil errupt with mushrooms! An added bonus! I have no idea how long it will last but the kids think it is so much fun to burrow into the little mounds to find the "marshmallows" as my daughter calls them.

Gardening Method- Square Foot Gardening

An update.
Internet research turned up Square Foot Gardening and Mel Bartholomew and I have spent the last month or two making it happen in my garden! Really interesting and something community gardeners can get into as well. Please check out his web site and give it a thourough read. My garden is thriving! It can be adapted for much larger areas as well, but part of its appeal as a method is its compactness and efficiency.

We are trying it too!

I am trying square foot gardening on the allotment we just rented. It seems to be a way of getting vegetables with a minimum of work!
We might try it for the housing cooperative we belong to. The idea would be to put squares around the building and form residents groups to tend them. Then residents can go pick vegetables up from a bench in a cool room when harvested.

Square foot

This style of gardening is perfect if your main limitation is space. I think this makes it more useful in temperate cities in Europe.

But I suspect in much of Australia we are more limited by access to water at the moment, and in the future access to quality soil amendments and structures to make raised beds may become major limitations in using this kind of intensive vegetable growing. As an alternative check out Solomon's "Gardening when it counts" to get an idea of how people do it when they don't have trucks to deliver soil or town water coming through a hose. I grow my veggies with next to no watering, and my field crops and orchard with none at all. This saves me enormous expense and endless hours of time (that I can use to do my weeding and planting at the right time instead).

If SFG is what works for you now then by all means do it. It is a great way to get a feel for how wonderful it is to grow your own food. But do consider other less resource intensive processes once you are ready to take your training wheels off.

Something about me

Hi, Shane,

I am one of those who read your blogs with interest. I love to hear what others are doing, and it is a big encouragement to keep trying!

I have a few blogs, too, so you can find out about me there as well. Lately I have spent more time on the internet researching Peak Oil and reading peoples' blogs than in my garden (oops!) but I keep checking in with the relocalize site to keep local.

In Kenilworth, members of our community are organising a local food festival for next Easter. It is still in the planning stages but I am on the organising committee so I will keep everyone up to date with details. I hope this raises community awareness and forms links between growers and consumers locally as well as developing business opportunities for all concerned. I would like it to continue into a growers market of some sort, or a farmers co-op or something.

I have been doing water quality checks with the Mary River Catchment Co-ordinating Committee down on my river for the last year, also. That's been interesting and I am getting a grant through them next year for bank regeneration so that will keep us busy for a while. I hope to plant some bush tucker foods among it so it has survival value as well ;)

I have been inspiring my daughters to grow veges at their houses and start with a few hens. Up to date they have left it all to me to grow the veges and the eggs. I said if peak oil changed our economy then they would all need to grow something, even if it was different and we swapped! They are getting the idea.

Anyway, read my blogs. I am always happy to discuss issues. I put the little ones to bed and then hit the computor!

Cooran Relocalisation

Hi Shane,

Mike here, I'm not one of the lurkers on your blog, I only just found it whilst looking for the Cooran site as Vic has registered our little town with the network. I still can't find it, maybe it takes time for the 'application' to be processed! Wheels operated by unpaid volunteers often turn slowly.

Mike.

re: Cooran | Joining relocalize.net

Hi Mike,
Thanks for posting. I just caught your comment. Thanks for getting in touch. We are currently in the process of redeveloping the Relocalization Network program and supporting website, relocalize.net, which has so far been quite an extensive process, and we decided that it would be better not to have groups joining during the transition. I've exchanged emails with Vic, and we will keep your contact info on record and let you know when we relaunch hopefully closer to October.

In the meantime, below are some resources that you might find useful (also passed on to Vic):

Relocalization Network Outreach Toolkit: http://relocalize.net/resources/outreach/toolkit
Let me know if you would like to download the zip file version - the file on the website has yet to be updated to include all of the attachments on the page.

You might also browse the project guides for some ideas: http://www.relocalize.net/guide
Fundraising Toolkit: http://www.relocalize.net/resources/fundraising

The folks at Green For All have also put together an excellent Media Toolkit with useful info on approaching media: http://www.greenforall.org/resources/media-toolkit/download

Lastly, you can check out additional links on our del.icio.us account here: http://del.icio.us/relocalize
We just recently started adding bookmarks and we'll continue to import links.

Best,
Shelby Tay
