Municipal Action Plan

 The Municipal Action Program

The Municipal Action Program (MAP) is an initiative of Post Carbon Institute, working to connect different municipalities around the world and helping them explore practical ways to prepare for the end of cheap energy. MAP assists local governments to understand the challenges of oil and gas depletion, assess their vulnerabilities, and develop unique strategies to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

As the world energy supply goes into decline, local governments will feel some of the largest direct impacts. Necessary changes will have to be made to transportation planning, electricity generation, fuel procurement, district heating, zoning by-laws, and other city and regional infrastructure systems. The Municipal Action Plan provides municipalities with the tools they need in order to adapt to an energy constrained future.

Demonstration projects currently exist in Sebastopol, Sonoma County and the San Francisco Bay Area, California. We are currently developing partnerships with Canadian municipalities to create local MAPs which will be used as case studies.

Transforming our cities and communities into energy-efficient, lower consumption areas is a complex process that may take many years to complete. Therefore, it is imperative that municipalities take the lead in exercising initiative and developing long-term plans to facilitate the transition to a low energy future.

Municipalities participating in the Plan will be provided with access to cutting-edge research, learning and consultation networks, and the support of a MAP Coordinator. If you are interested in participating in Municipal Action, please contact our Communications Coordinator, Laura Bonenfant, for more information.
