I'm Cal, got recomended to relocalize.net from another forum I visit, chap's in the US I think. the daily reckoning forum

Hi Meg, the lone soldier, I'd like to think it wasn't going to come to this however if my grand kids can say, "you know if dad hadn't prepared himself for this then we wouldn't be here". Then it's all good and well.

For a few years now I've been paying off debt, I bought a farm and am getting ready to move down there for a self sufficient life style.

I just registered straight away so I'm going to have a look around now.

How about you ?

Greetings Cal and Meg, I'm Rob, from CA USA. I'll be visiting Perth soon, just for a few days, and thought I might be able to meet some like-minded people...poked around and found your group, but Cal yours is the only post so far. I discovered peak-oil 2 years ago in the book "The Party's Over", and I now go through bouts of serious depression about it, mostly because I'd be happy to prepare, like you have Cal, but I'm having a very hard time convincing my family that it's serious, and imminent, and that we need to learn future-skills now, which will mean a radical departure from our current "typical American suburb" lifestyle. I grew up on farms, so I'm somewhat familar with how we'll have to live, but of course everything was mechanized and easy compared to how our grandkids will have to live...still, we have to face it head on. I'd love to meet, if possible, check out your farm and talk more over a beer or two.

Re: Another newby

Hi Rob,

I joined the site a month or so ago, I'm driving the ship for my family too !
I've been on the get back to nature for some now though, my wife and I both have roots in the country.
I'm a bit of a greenie at heart even though I have transport business, I've been consciously steering us towards a rural lifestyle for some amount of time, we're in the hurry-up-and-relax phase of the plan now. We have a small parcel of land and are working franticly to set it up to live on, ETA 12 to 18 months.
Far as the activity in Perth goes - zip, nil, none, diddely squat - I posted to hook up with a group to exchange ideas and get a more informed view of the statistics but have received no correspondence back.
See, up 'til now I've been doing it alone but I think as we move closer to the end of the "Energy Age", those who think alike need to be together. I've had a serious injury not long ago so am recovering from that and will be back on deck shortly and I will be more actively seeking the others on this site out.
If you are curious and would like the contact, there is a forum I'm on - it's a financial/economic forum but there are some Peak Oil guys on it, it's - http://www.dailyreckoning.com.au/talk/index.php . I haven't been on for a week or so because I've been tied up with other things however will be checking back in very soon.
Chin up mate, you won't be able to make the change immediately, just start by changing small daily habits and if you have family or friends in the country, get in good acquaintance with them.
All the best.

Re: Another newby

Cal, can you please forward this to Rob?

Dear Cal and Rob

I'm Meg. I started Post Oil Perth about 6 weeks ago and have been "too busy" since then to do ANYTHING with it. And my apologies to you both... I think your enquiries must have come in through my junk folder.

Anyhow, I really need to pull my finger out eh? This is such an important challenge!!! And I will be looking for suggestions from people on what should be up on that site... any ideas?

It would be great to get together and brainstorm a little. I live in the Bullsbrook foothills north of Midland (near Pearce airbase) on a small farm (we're living in a shed and owner-building). Where's your place Cal?

Cheers

Meg

Re: Another newby

We sold the house last year to pay down our debt, we've got 120 acres in dardanup, it has blue gums on at the moment but there is about 20 acres free to build and develope.

We have a shed (not erected yet) the mains power goes on this year and we will be hooking up solar/wind grid once the house is built.

Yeah, I'd like to make some time too to do some brainstorming and community education, the end of the "Energy Age" looms ever closer.

Time is a thing for us as well but I would at least like to get a comm line established and make a time to meet up, whenever that can work - no hurry but is a priority - you know. I'm a couple of weeks away from available time.

Re: Another newby

Beautiful place, Dardanup. Lucky you. What are you living in?

I know what you mean about being busy... every hour away being some job that didn't get done today! But yes, if you are coming up to Perth we could arrange to meet somewhere and have a coffee-conference. And any ideas you have in the meantime please post em to the forum and share.

Better let you get back to work!

Re: Another newby

Meg, we live in Perth. We're just getting the placeset up for a shed and hopefully will be moving down before Xmas '09.
I've been down this weekend to cut a few trees out so the power can come up the hill, we have a 2nd hand shed which will be going up in the next couple of months, you know, a bsae somewhere livable til the house is built.
I regularly ride to Bindoon with a mate and have coffe at the bakery so next time we go I'll let you know and if it works out, all well and good otherwise it'll be some other time.
