Midwest Renewable Energy Fair

Several of us folks from the Peoria area attended the 17th Midwest Renewable Energy Fair on June 23-25 near Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and it was an excellent experience despite some intense thunderstorms. Numerous informative workshops made up a full schedule, plus many dozens of vendors, exhibits, and other activities. The highlight for me personally was James Howard Kunstler's address on Saturday afternoon, in which he emphasized the folly of our typical obsession with seeking miraculous techno-fixes that would somehow allow us to continue our suburban lifestyle despite the waning of petroleum. He noted the prevalence of this naive idea among college audiences. Instead, we must face the necessity of profound changes in our culture and begin making what Kustler calls "other arrangements" beginning with rehabilitation of our railways.

Washington Post: "Demand May Outpace Saudi Oil Capacity"

This article seems to indicate the mainstream is edging toward recognition of peak oil, but note how wildly optimistic the estimates of Saudi capacity are in this article compared to analyses of Simmons, Deffeyes, etc.

Welcome / corn stoves?

Welcome to our discussion board for issues related to global energy-depletion and its potential effects and countermeasures in Central Illinois.

Aside from trying to raise awareness of the issue, one of the main things on my mind at this point is the idea of installing a corn stove for heating my home. Obviously natural gas is costing more and more, and there is potential for actual interruptions of supply in the not-distant future. This may be an even more pressing issue than oil, and at least in our region, corn for heat may be one of the most viable forms of "biomass" energy available.
