Over 11,000 of us have already signed up, and have committed to taking the equivalent of more than 16,000 cars off the road by reducing our personal greenhouse gas emissions. You can answer some short questions and input your address and it will generate a letter you can personalise and send to your local member of Parliament - it even creates it in PDF and gives you the name and address of your MP! I cruised around the map and saw that a number of people in my city have already signed up, and other members of relocalize.net have too (yep, I found you Sonya!) I asked the ACF to add functionality to allow people to message one another through the site to work together on community actions - hopefully they'll come through. </p> <p>My local MP is Paul Neville. I emailed him my letter, rather than posting it, to save transport emissions and materials consumption. I also edited it heavily. Here's what my letter said:</p> <p>Dear Mr Neville,</p> <p>Climate change and resource depletion are the most critical issues we face today, bar none. As indicated in next month's IPCC report and recently discussed by <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/10/09/2054191.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Tim Flannery</a>, because of our overconsumption, since 2005 Australia has already been producing the amount of greenhouse gases that weren't expected until 2015. We have very little time before climate change happens so rapidly and on such a large scale that it is irreversible. To reduce my greenhouse pollution, I:</p> <p>- shop with businesses that sell local (instead of imported) products whenever possible<br /> - will be installing solar panels on my home<br /> - have installed a water efficient shower head and reuse my greywater in the garden<br /> - always set my washing machine to wash my clothes in cold water, on a lower RPM setting<br /> - always turn off appliances at the wall when they aren't in use, instead of leaving on standby<br /> - eat less meat, grow my own vegetables<br /> - work from home, and walk or bike instead of driving whenever possible</p> <p>It is absolutely critical that we reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and unnecessary stuff. We must carefully conserve resources, and manage and recycle our waste. We must start treating the environment with the respect it deserves - we don't have anywhere else to go once we've used it up and left it for dead. I hope to see Australia become a leader in relocalisation: reducing consumption and producing all our needs locally, instead of polluting our air, water and soil to transport the latest shipment of iPods.</p> <p>Ordinary Australians are doing what we can, but we also need your leadership. I would like you, as my political representative, to step up to the challenge of reducing Australias greenhouse pollution. What goals will you set to reduce our emissions by 2020 and 2050 as part of Australia's contribution to avoiding dangerous climate change? How will you ensure that 25% of Australia's electricity comes from renewable energy by 2020? Will you help Australia join the rest of the world by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol? It was an absorbing and wildly inspiring trip around the back roads of America that examined the detrimental effects that Wal-Marts and Starbucks type giants have on communities, compared to the strength of local economies where support for independent businesses keeps money in the community. I'd like to run it by you all to see if anyone's tried this before, and if you have any suggestions on how to implement it.</p> <p>The idea is to host an interactive map on our website, showing the local region in high detail. We then collect data from the community and show it visually on the map, eg:</p> <ul> <li>Home vegetable gardens</li> <li>Organic farms</li> <li>Green innovations</li> <li>Businesses that buy local produce</li> <li>Solar panels</li> <li>Biofuel producer</li> <li>Grey water system</li> <li> Designated permaculture 'zone' <ul> <li>Zone 1: Home garden</li> <li>Zone 2: Town infrastructure</li> <li>Zone 3: Small farms</li> <li>Zone 4: Forestry</li> <li>Zone 5: Native habitat</li> </ul> </li> <li>etc</li> </ul> <p> Once some of the map has been marked, people in the community moving towards sustainability can identify each other. This could facilitate the creation of 'green clusters' and business networks which could make progress more effectively than they could alone.</p> <p>The map &amp; data could also be used as the basis for an Energy Descent Action Plan.</p> <p> There are some technical hurdles to jump before we can implement such a scheme. While I have some web development skills, I don't have any GIS experience and the learning curve may be steep. There seems to be a lot of open source GIS systems out there but it will take a lot of time and work to research to find the most suitable one and to learn how to use it.</p> <p>Google Maps is not usable in our area due to the low-resolution coverage. Our local council (Caloundra City) already hosts an <a href="http://maproom.caloundra.qld.gov.au/website/calmap/viewer.asp?w=calmap" rel="nofollow">impressive online map</a> with excellent resolution and numerous useful layers. We are self contained for water and sewage and largely for energy, this will improve as soon as we install our wind generator.</p> <p>Local council has written to all residents down my road and an adjoining one 'offering' a garbage collection service. This we don't need as our household produces one small garbage bag of rubbish each week. We do have a lot of recycling which I drop at the tip every week. </p> <p>My point is this, I know Council has to respond to requests by residents, but why doesn't our Council work towards minimising everybody's rubbish rather than giving everyone massive waste bins which just encourage people to be lazy and not make an effort to shop wisely and recycle.</p> <p>It is quite a lot of effort to reduce waste, especially in the beginning when I had to think very carefully about what I purchased and from whom. The biggest waste generators I found to be fresh meat and vegetables from the local supermarket. I now purchase meat from a butcher who uses minimal packaging and fruit and vegetables pretty much the only packaging is the second hand cardboard box.</p> <p>Surely education and convenient recycling facilities are the way to go. By breaking the forum into these 10 categories I'd hoped they might be easier to think over and contribute. That includes adding questions as well as answers.</p> <p>This week I discovered there are now more books being written about surviving and thriving in a Post Carbon world, which is excellent news. One that caught my eye is The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook: Recipes for Changing Times by Albert Bates. Has anyone read this? Or is there anything similar you can recommend? There are many additional titles in the Resources and Publications section of this site as well. I'll be going through this section and adding what I can summarise under the topics in this site's forum where it can be locally applied.</p> <p>So I'm wondering if anyone has read any of these books or articles or found any other websites that can provide the information we are looking for, ie practical strategies to establish alternatives to services and products that will cease to be available. I'm still hopeful that with the right structure and perhaps a bit more publicity this site can work. Admittedly I'm a bit daunted by the idea of making Post Carbon Northern Rivers (PCNR) an awareness raising body; as I put in the statement of intent I'd prefer this site to be a way to enable concerned people to come together and share questions and info about what can be done locally in response.</p> <p>So I will stick with this angle for the time being. My hope is to one day have a wiki here that can be printed (via a Creative Commons licence perhaps) and distributed before it becomes impractical. In the absence of any suggestions re structure I've used the topics from the Relocalize Forums at <a href="http://www.relocalize.net/forum" title="http://www.relocalize.net/forum" rel="nofollow">http://www.relocalize.net/forum</a> and added Health as well. These may grow into wiki sections with time. Hopefully referring to these headings in this site will encourage a response.
