Bike Lanes

I have asked the City if they could help us encourage bike use on the
island, but have yet to get a response from anyone on this issue. My
next step is to go to Town Hall and present my case that way.

Do any of you feel unsafe riding your bike here?

I kid you not, I have lost control twice now because of cars driving by
too close to me, and one time I almost ran right into a police car as
he was pulling out of Avenue E, he saw me and laughed.

I would really like to see an actual bike lane on the island, on both
sides, maybe 3 feet wide or so, that's it. A little paint on the
pavement, a few signs to warn drivers, the "riding with traffic" law
enforcement, and a semi-regular street sweeper keeping the sand off the
lines.

If more of us could safely ride our bikes to the store, to the open air
market, to Times Square, etc, there would be a lot less cars on the
road for one thing, we wouldn't have to sit in traffic, and we wouldn't
be so afraid of getting run over everytime we went out for a bike ride.

We're looking for more folks here on the island that are interested in
growing a small garden, either in their backyards, on their flat roof,
etc.

Would occasional classes on this matter be interesting to anyone?

Neighbors helping Neighbors

Got some yardwork you need done? Got some vegetables you can spare?
Have something you can trade? Need some weeds pulled? Do you need an
Handyman?

I'd like to share some ideas on bartering here. Is anyone interested in
trading, or in need of a helper? Let's try to keep this as free as
possible. Most of us in the group have some sort of marketable skill,
or something of value that can be traded, so if you are in need, or are
willing to help out, just let us know! :)

"Time Dollars"

Not sure if you folks have heard about this yet, but the new Time Dollars idea is gathering a lot of interest here in Florida, and now that people have somewhere that they can turn for help, it's catching on like wildfire. The local paper (islandsandpaper.com) just did a front page story on our Localization Committee here, and wow, that was a great way to get some free advertising out there. So, if you want to start promoting a currency-less environment in your town too, let the local media know about. Their itching for a story like this, so show them your stuff.I have 4 different officials from town hall interested here now too, so I can tell you first hand that the Time Dollars idea is a great way to rally your local townspeople. Rain catchments and cisterns..

Localized water production is very important. In a blackout, most cities can only continue to pump water for a matter of hours, so as long as you have your own water collected (cisterns and catchments are cheap) you'll survive it just fine. What's even better is the fact that you can eliminate your water bill too :)
