Byron King, geologist, attorney, and former navy pilot, spoke to an audience of over 50 people at the Mount Lebanon Public Library on November 13, 2006. Byron, a member of Energy Forum of Western Pennsylvania, spoke about peak oil, global warming, and alternative energy sources. The program was sponsored jointly by Mount Lebanon Public Library and Energy Forum of Western Pennsylvania.
Byron had the good fortune to meet M. King Hubbert, who correctly predicted the domestic and global peak oil phenomena. Summarizing Byron's talk, domestic peak oil occurred in the 1970s, and global peak oil either has occurred or will occur within a few years. We won't actually know until after it's occurred. However, we will see negative economic consequences shortly after the peak, and they may be severe with unpredictable outcomes.
Global warming is already occurring, and again, the outcomes are unpredictable.
Byron spoke on several energy alternatives, which are often proposed as a technical fix for sustaining our current energy intensive lifestyle. The technological fixes are basically all fossil fuel alternatives, or derivatives of fossil fuels. None can sustain our present energy use, we have to learn to use much less, and what we do use must be sustainable, such as solar, wind, and hydraulic.
Following the talk, the audience had a lively question period, which continued until we had to break it up due to the library's closing.
It was another successful event; the community response has been positive and appreciative
