Carbon Offsets Alternatives

Carbon offsetting is evolving. When I first heard of it, it was empowering, exiting the people who were using it, who didn't want to drive but couldn't always avoid it. Now it has become part of the mainstream "let someone else do it" culture, where we consume and consume and pollute and then hope that we can purchase our way out. Purchasing carbon offsets is a very backwards approach: there are so many ways to offset your own carbon pollution. (It's also more realistic: if you offset your flight by planting a garden so you don't have to have as much food trucked to you, you realize that you're still burning fuel on that flight.)

There could be a variety of pledges that neighbors can make to help cut carbon they would be using:

* Walk over to your neighbor's house with a compact florescent (and a ladder?) and offer to install it.
* Community garden days. Less watered lawns, more trees and gardens.
* Tell your neighbors when you go shopping if you drive, and see if they want to go with you.
* I especially like combining community, ideas and actions: start a rotating movie night, where everyone shows up for an environmental (or your favorite cause) video to watch and discuss, followed by two hours of greening: a mini-barn-raising to plant a garden, install insulation or low-flow plumbing.

Add your ideas to the comments.... This will soon be hosted on the Do It Yourself Carbon Offsets page at SpaceShare, would love co-creators.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

George Olah and the Methanol-Based Economy

A fascinating new alternative energy concept is being promulgated in the scientific community right now: the methanol-based economy. Its leading proponent is Nobel Laureate Dr. George Olah, originally from Hungary (he sounds a little like Bela Lugosi). He and his fellow researchers have developed a methanol fuel cell that can create electricity and, when reversed, will in turn convert industrial carbon dioxide into liquid methanol. Think about this: A viable fuel cell that will convert the destructive greenhouse gas CO2 into liquid methanol. Consequently, methanol doesn't require vast tracts of agricultural crops for its production. Put simply, it can be synthesized.

Moreover, methanol has none of the formidable safety, storage and conversion problems of hydrogen as a potential public transportation fuel. Methanol, Olah states, also has the chemical properties necessary to make it an alternative resource for all the industrial products now currently developed from hydrocarbons. This is a huge plus.

But don't take my word for it. Olah's new co-authored book on all these ideas is Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy. You can also hear his recent interview on NPR's Science Friday (with a rather antsy host) at: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5369301

This guy is really, really smart, and his ideas are well worth pondering and discussing.

Progressively,

Geopolitics to Die For

Giant Wakeup Call!

The same fear and propaganda campaign that led us into Iraq is now going into high gear against Iran. Trousered ape John Bolton is now calling the situation with Iran a nuclear 9/11. How's that for a little hyperbole? See: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11849446/

For an outstanding analysis by Juan Cole of this campaign, also see: http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20060313_fishing_for_a_pretext_in_ir...

So I guess Bolton means the Iranians are going to fly nuclear bombs into the Empire State Building, whether before or after Godzilla storms ashore in Brooklyn I don't know. So faced with the imminent Hollywood destruction of New York City, probably any week now, the Bush Administration will just have to preemptively strike again, or so the psychotic fantasy goes. And there goes the planet, impoverished, poisoned and tortured with another devastating war. And this one will likely send oil prices into the stratosphere.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Lovelock's Gaian Wakeup Call

How many of you have read the article posted on our website this Wednesday entitled "The Earth is about to catch a morbid fever that may last as long as 100,000 years" by James Lovelock, the maverick British scientist who first developed the Gaia Theory? For those of you who haven't heard of the Gaia Theory, it is the proposition, now widely accepted in many, though not all scientific circles, that the Earth is a living superorganism that consciously monitors and regulates the environment, atmosphere and climate to maintain optimum conditions for life.

But Gaia is not invulnerable. Lovelock has warned in the past that the massive imbalances that industrialized, technological civilization is creating with almost total disregard for Gaia's forests, mountains, oceans, plants and animals has now eliminated much of the resources Gaia employs to regulate the biosphere and atmosphere.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Notes of the December meetup/post carbon group meeting

San Francisco Oil Awareness
14 December 2005
Friend's Meeting House

Attendees: 13

I. Announcements. The January 11, 2006 meeting will feature a speaker Marc Geller on an electric vehicle fueled by PV-generated electricity.

II. Agenda.

1. Short Presentations.
Following up on a proposal to hold regular short discussions on various energy alternatives, Loren agreed to talk on wind power in February, Sharon on ocean energy in February, and David on biofuels in January or March.

2. Meeting structure
Jennifer introduced a proposed meeting format, focusing on a consensus process to determine the agenda and to move agenda items. The format would include a Facilitator to set time, guide the agenda, review, enforce timelimlits, coordination and closing the meeting, along with a Notetaker and a Scribe. A summary of the format is posted at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfoilawareness/message/7

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Finally, Some Good News

A few days ago, the outcome of the Montreal Climate Summit looked grim. The American delegation was trying to throw king-sized monkey wrenches into the discussions, staging a walkout and working behind the scenes to dissuade other delegations from taking part. Things seemed to be unraveling. At the last minute, however, Bill Clinton popped out of a rabbit's hat, so-to-speak, to throw a monkey-wrench of his own into the Bush delegation, giving a rousing, well-received speech in defense of the Summit's goals and principles while openly criticizing the Bush Administration as dead-wrong on global warming.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

The Incorrigibles

You would think that after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma that Exxon/Mobil, the oil lobby and their pseudo-think tanks would at least pause to reflect for one minute whether the sizable damage to their oil rigs and refineries may have just a tiny bit to do with global warming. Well, you might as well be waiting for Godot. These morons are as predictable as sharks in the middle of a school of tuna and equally ravenous. Now they are launching a campaign to derail the Kyoto Protocol and any meaningful efforts to counter global warming and greenhouse emissions in the European Union. For the full story on this, see:

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

China Beginning to Go Green

I have been wondering at the apparent contradiction between China's great strides in industrialization and economic growth, and the glaring disasters that China will face environmentally if they continue on the traditional Communist model that ignores the environmental consequences of such growth. I thought, how can they be so successful with their economic strategies and so damned oblivious to destroying China's biosphere? Or are they really?

For I also knew that China has become open to progressive environmental influences, and that Chinese scientists and various institutes had actually agreed on a collaboration project with the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, based at the University of Vermont (see: http://www.uvm.edu/giee/), and whose mission is to "transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries in order to address the complex interrelationships between ecological and economic systems in a broad and comprehensive way." To put it another way, the Gund Institute is a powerful proponent of Green Economics. This project took place this last Spring in China and was apparently a success. How much this has impacted Chinese official thought I have no idea. Perhaps other readers know more. But I got a big surprise when I read Tuesday that China now intends to invest 180 billion dollars in renewable energy resources over the next 15 years! This of course dwarfs the paltry sum Washington has voted to actually invest in renewable energy.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

A new perspective on Peak Oil

Sorry I've been absent from this site recently, school is totally kicking my ass right now. I'm lucky enough to be studying Activism and Social Change at the New College of California. The courses I'm currently taking have kept me from participating in PCI ventures as much as I would like, but they have provided me with valuable insights which I believe have added to my understanding of the political and social dimensions of peak oil. I'm using these points as a basis for any new discussions I have about Peak Oil and Gas, starting tonight at Acterra in Palo Alto (EOS screening).

When I first came to learn about the Hubbert Peak, I admit I was very much swept into the apocolyptic mentality that is everpresent within the Peaknik community. I'd like to think that my viewpoint has matured quite a bit since then. Here are some thoughts I've had that I think are useful in the outset of any peak oil discussion.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Needed: A National Vision

Not everyone in Establishment circles is brain-dead, gone fishing or bought off. There is a hard-core of intelligent individuals who know drastic change is needed. Roger Morris, an elder statesman-type figure in Washington political circles, with respected credentials in journalism and academia, has gotten together with Steven Schmidt, one of the founders of the American Green Movement, to draft a strategic vision for the 21st Century that is well worth taking a look at. It is a long document, and I have only superficially read it, but this is precisely what we need to see happening on the national discourse level now, an intelligent alternative to the mindless miasma that currently "disserves" us as a poor imitation of a strategic blueprint. Some kind of progressive manifesto that a rather rudderless intelligentsia can rally around is needed right now, and this draft may be a good starting point. Roger's email address is also provided at the end, so one can actually dialogue with him. The draft is at:

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

PEAKING OF WORLD OIL PRODUCTION: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS, POLICY OPTIONS AND PRUDENT ACTIONS

RICHARD HEINBERG, Author, The Party's Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies; Editor, Museletter; Core Faculty Member, New College of California

Mounting evidence suggests that the rate of global oil production may be nearing its all-time maximum. Richard Heinberg, North America's foremost peak oil educator, asserts that as an inevitable decline sets in, economic, social and political impacts are likely to be severe. He will discuss the latest petroleum data, a recent government-sponsored report on peak oil and the Oil Depletion Protocol, which may be the best path for the United States and other nations to avert economic crisis, resource wars and terrorism during the second half of the Age of Oil.

Bay Area Peak Oil

Smoking Gun: Hard Evidence Big Oil Is Jacking Up Prices

Some of us have suspected this all along, and now the FTCR (Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights) has proven it: they have uncovered internal memos from Exxon/Mobil, Chevron and Texaco that show how they have intentionally reduced domestic refining capacity to drive up profits and push independent refiners out of business. For the FTCR article, see:
http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/energy/pr/?postId=5110&pageTitle=Interna...

This website links to actual copies of the incriminating memos. Are there any lawyers out there who want to look into class action lawsuits? We have to use the legal system as a tool for confronting these vampires. It will undoubtedly take a powerful legal stake driven right through their corporate hearts to free us (and them) from their dark ways.

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Raising Awareness in San Francisco
San Francisco Post Carbon is a group of concerned citizens raising awareness on issues related to peak oil: energy and resource depletion, overpopulation, continuous economic growth.

Monthly Meetings
San Francisco Post Carbon meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00p. Our present meeting location is downtown at 50 California Street. Meetings cover a wide range of topics related to peak oil, such as cohousing, agriculture, viability of alternative energies, etc. Join the Bay Area mailing list for meeting details. Our regional Bay Area peak oil groups hold monthly meetings at other times and locations.

Oil Age Poster
A working group from San Francisco has created and published a peak oil poster, for sale online at oilposter.org. Proceeds benefit free distribution of the poster to schools, and also help support Post Carbon. Over 1,600 posters have been donated to educators free of charge. In addition, every member of congress has received a poster thanks to the assistance of Representative Roscoe Bartlett.

Community Outreach
We participate in local events such as Solfest, the Green Festival, peak oil movie screenings, speaking events, etc. We also attend regional, national, and international meetings on peak oil, relocalization, and sustainability.

San Francisco Projects
The SF Bay Area Post Carbon groups are working together on projects that support our mission.

Our "Oil Age" poster has been tremendously successful in communicating the significance and urgency of our peaking in oil production. Thanks to Colin Campbell for the oil production statistics.

One member created a college-level course on the subject of peak oil, which he taught at Oberlin during the Spring 2006 semester. Post Carbon members helped refine the syllabus during working sessions, offering feedback and ideas on the course content and readings.

Friends in another SF peak oil group have successfully lobbied the SF board of supervisors to listen up about peak oil.

Together we are planning other peak oil projects, such as a San Francisco conference, a peak oil film series, a media response team, an art show, a local course on peak oil, and more.

Post Carbon Institute is undertaking a Bay Area relocalization effort.

Help Strengthen Local Networks
Other communities in Northern California are actively working together to prepare locally for peak oil. How can you and your organization participate? Join other progressive groups and activists in the Bay Area.

Craig's List is working to pull people together through their Bay Area Progressive Directory.

The community of Willits is way ahead of other Bay Area communities in preparing for peak oil.

Folks in Sebastopol are also starting to take action, led by a former mayor, Larry Robinson.

The city of Oakland has a 100-year plan, including local gardens for food production.

SF Department of the Environment is investigating a plan to harness tidal forces under the Golden Gate bridge.

We can all learn from one another, cooperate in pursuing our common goals, and together make our lifestyles here in the SF Bay Area more sustainable.
