Body:
Permatopia/Post Carbon Eugene is Eugene, Oregon's 'peak oil outcomes' group. We continue to evolve(our name may change too). Meetings began Dec. '04. Our current activities you may want to start locally include building a lending library for Peak Oil related books and videos, planning food growing workshops and work parties to create sustainable solutions to our predicament at each other’s homes (including 'regular' homes, to inspire folks about what they can do at their own homes), such as rainwater catchments and solar hot water. There has also been talk of canvassing neighborhoods with a survey to explore awareness of and solutions to Peak Oil, and organizing a “know your neighbor project.
In May I recieved endorsement by my city neighborhood assn. and 3 other groups for a showing of The End of Suburbia. Our City Councilor attended. Our new mayor has begun to take input on the upcoming challenges. Repeated showings of "The End of Suburbia" will continue by our group in our community, to help raise awareness.
On Jan. 10, 2006, internationally-recognized expert on Peak Oil-and-collapse Richard Heinberg will be speaking in Eugene. We hope to see you. Location TBA. I've also been in discussion with Post Carbon Institute's own brilliant director, Julian Darley. To see about him visiting Eugene around that time to help lead "relocalization" workshops to help us rebuild our local economy when the oil economy fails us, as it is starting to do now. Please visit PCI's "Relocalize Now" book website now(http://www.postcarbon.org/store/relocalize) to see how YOU can get involved in planning your community's healthier future, "post-carbon". To quote the Tidewater Post Carbon Network: "One thing to consider, here and everywhere, is that those neighborhoods and communities who start organizing and preparing NOW for the oil crunch, and for a more localized, sustainable lifestyle, will be infinitely better off than those who are caught unawares. Planning is ALWAYS better than panic, and knowing your neigbors is ALWAYS better than being total strangers, especially when things start getting rough."
Eugene and W. Oregon are blessed with a temperate climate, and mild, rainy Winters. We have a longer growing season on very rich topsoil, suitable for re-localizing, in the emerging post-peak oil economy.
Fourth Sunday of the month meeting places subject to change, but our Sept. 25th meeting is set for Maitreya Ecovillage, 882 Almaden, Eugene(NW corner of Almaden and W. Broadway). This month, 5PM potluck; 6-8PM, special presentation: slideshow and open discussion on Bioregional Sustainability and Ecological Design. With presentations by Food Not Lawns co-founders Heather Coburn, Tobias Policha, and Nick Routledge, followed by a loosely-facilitated roundtable discussion. At the Maitreya EcoVillage, Broadway and Almaden, in the Straw Bale house. Free/Donations Appreciated.
8-9 or 9:30 Post Carbon Eugene regular meeting. There are a few people with ideas already about actions they want to talk to the group about at the meeting but if there are more items for the agenda please email them and we will try to work them into the meeting. Agenda items to: fraedasch@hotmail.com. If you are a first time attender please note this in your email to Fraeda.
