We met at the home of Bruce and Anne Billings, Wagner Cresc. Ian, Karin, Marianne MW, Anne and Bruce. Regrets from Tracey P., Traicee C., Robert P.
Ian showed a powerpoint presentation for use in introducing Sustainable Burlington to audiences in churches, service clubs, schools, etc. We critiqued it and made improvements.
We reviewed developments since our last meeting (Dec)
- a bank account is set up at DUCA credit union, on Brant St.
- SBCG will have the right to two premier showings in public venues of the upcoming Escape from Suburbia, and unlimited 'salon' showings in private homes.
- a brochure has been developed by Tracey, Ian and Marianne for use at shows and mailings to citizens (see attached)
- Ian is planning to attend a workshop on Feb 16-18 by Robert Waldrop, A Little Way of Justice and Peace: Examining our Personal Consumption. He is hoping to fill a van of folks from Burlington who are exploring sustainable living.
Description from website of St Marguerite Centre, Pembroke ON:
The question of the practical details of how we live, of how we shop and spend our money, is one of the primary social-justice questions of our era. We make many individual economic choices every day and each year we make political choices. Sometimes those choices inflict cruelty and injustice upon others and the natural environment. Each of us can take positive steps to change our personal consumption for the betterment of all... Join us in exploring the benefits of good choices and of following "a little way of justice and peace".
Robert Waldrop is a Catholic Worker from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and is involved in community supported agriculture, urban agriculture and a natural, local food coop. Cost $125
- Karin reported on developments with the Energy Preparedness Action Plan. She is selecting areas of research that need doing, following the outline from Tompkins County Localization Project, one of the best around. More people are needed to round out the taskgroup so Karin is preparing a questionaire for volunteers. We need server space to upload background files. Ian will call Jon Bosak in Ithaca for suggestions in setting a system like theirs (TCLP. Marianne has a website we may be able to use on sympatico.
- We are exploring a site for a community garden on the property of GE ZENON near BurlOak.
- we have a list of films we would like to show at UC Cinemas but have not gotten agreement from Jason to proceed. (see below)
Discussion
Outreach: the social dynamics are most important to us, we need to be enjoying building new contacts in the community and creating the 'social glue' that will help in the future. We would like a stand for literature at general events to post our flyers. Marianne will do local paper clippings and write a synopsis for the website.
A speaker idea is the Mississauga advisor on urban planning, Gil Penalosa, who was head of parks in Columbia Mexico, and a reputation for making cities livable.
A site visit idea is a family farm in Brantford which is still operated by a 91 yr old woman and her relatives, keeping up traditional sufficiency lifestyle and skills. Ian has been invited to visit and will report.
