What a fantastic day! Thanks to all who made the first SustainaBundy Garage Sale Party a resounding success. See the photo-recap here: http://sustainabundy.org/photos/GSP1

How much would you pay for a marble cheese board, a DSL filter for your computer, a diamond-look tennis bracelet, a floral candle gift set, an Egyptian-motif decorative plate, a gift wrapped china teacup, four raffle tickets and three breakfasts? How about $17?

That's all Moira Elliott, her mum Sandra and her children Brooke and Bradlee spent on Saturday at the SustainaBundy Garage Sale Christmas Breakfast Party, where the theme was "Buy Second Hand First!"

"I think it's a great idea - for one thing it's cheaper, and I really like recycling," Mrs. Elliott said. "I'm right into what SustainaBundy is doing, working for a sustainable Bundaberg - my kids won't listen to me when I talk about helping the environment but maybe they'll listen to SustainaBundy."

In addition to keeping money circulating in the local economy and reducing the amount of stuff sent to landfill, the hundred-odd attendees of the Garage Sale Party also donated over $80 to SustainaBundy through cash donations or by purchasing breakfast and raffle tickets. Gregor Phillips, who was visiting family in Bundaberg, purchased several beer brewing bottles at the Garage Sale Party and won the raffle: a basket full of certified organic and chemical free fruit and vegetables donated by Bundaberg Marketplace Fruits.

SustainaBundy V.P. Andi Hazelwood played "SustainaBundy spruiker" on the day, selling breakfast and raffle tickets while telling visitors about SustainaBundy's goals of reducing consumption and sourcing daily needs locally. She said, "the feedback was fantastic - we signed up six financial members for the group and had lots of people telling us how much Bundaberg needs an environmental movement."

Mrs. Hazelwood said the proceeds from the day would go towards the printing of SustainaBundy's upcoming "green" guide for the Bundaberg region.

Following on the theme of the Garage Sale Party, SustainaBundy will host a movie night at 5:30pm in the School of Arts Building on Tuesday the 15th of January. It'll be a double feature, "The Story of Stuff" and "There's No Such Thing as Away," two short films about production, waste and recycling.
