I have been "slaving over a hot computer" since the SustainaBundy idea first came to me, when the NewsMail introduced me and my husband Dean to the people of Bundaberg eight months ago. Now I can hardly believe that I hold the fruits of all my labour in my hands - The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide: how to live a GREENER life in & around Bundaberg.
The little booklet may not look like much to some people, but for the past couple days I've been running around, jumping up and down saying, "I wrote a book, I wrote a book!"
A 100 page, A5 guide printed by Fishprint on recycled paper with vegetable based inks on a waterless press, The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide is an annual publication that local residents can keep in their glove box or backpack. It includes a directory of local businesses that can help us all be more environmentally responsible at home and in the office, how-to articles on reducing consumption and waste, harvesting, storing and conserving water, natural resource management, eating fresh, local food and many more. It also includes handy calendars for regional, national and worldwide environmental events, a local produce availability guide provided by the Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers, and a guide to the various markets in the region.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project: SustainaBundy members Jacqui McLucas, Carol Sweeney and my husband Dean, supporters Leah Jones, Dr Jill Englemann, Beth Whitworth from the Greens, Maureen Schmitt from Landcare, Sonya Wallace from the Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre, and Nick Maclean, Carl Moller, Amy Gosley and Lee Dorahy from The Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management (BMRG).
We are also extremely grateful to BMRG for funding the printing of the guide and our forthcoming "got local?" companion bumper stickers. BMRG has taken delivery of 50 copies of the guide, and BMRG CEO David Brown said, "The Burnett Mary Regional Group is very impressed with the enthusiasm and interest generated by the SustainaBundy Group in such a short time and is pleased to support this initiative. This guide, and future editions, will become a valuable resource for our community, providing useful and relevant information. I look forward to strengthening our on-going relationship with SustainaBundy and the Bundaberg community."
The official 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide release party will be at the SustainaBundy All Day Movie Festival on Saturday 29th March at the School of Arts Building on Bourbong Street. The guide will be available for a suggested price of $2, and SustainaBundy "got local?" bumper stickers will be available for a suggested price of $1. Larger donations are encouraged, as all proceeds will go to future SustainaBundy projects relating to energy, transport, local economy and food, waste and more. After the release party, the guidebook and stickers will be available for purchase from several local businesses and at the Shalom Markets - stay tuned for more details. Complimentary advance copies of the publication are currently being delivered to SustainaBundy members, advertisers, interested organisations and local media.
This project wasn't so much a labour of love as a labour of duty. We all need to understand the scary problems of fossil fuel depletion and climate change and begin to implement successful, proven responses - and we have to do it as soon as possible. The guidebook covers both the problems and the responses. It's not perfect and it's certainly not comprehensive, but it is an important first step in working for a sustainable Bundaberg region.
Thank you for supporting SustainaBundy.

re: Sweet release: The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide
Freshly delivered today, The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide will be available FREE at the Good Guys on Takalvan Street for a limited time while supplies last!
If you're in the CBD, you can pick up a copy of the guidebook for $2 at the Burnett Mary Regional Group, that pretty old bank building at the corner of Bourbong and Maryborough Streets - and it'll also be available for purchase at the official release party, Saturday 29th March at the SustainaBundy All Day Movie Festival in the School of Arts Building on Bourbong. Additional locations will be announced soon.
Tomorrow we'll post complimentary copies of the guidebook to Kevin Rudd, Peter Garrett, Penny Wong, Christine Milne, Andrew McNamara and Dave Gibson. The accompanying letter notes, "As a political leader aware of the urgency of climate instability and energy depletion, we want you to know that grassroots efforts like ours are making a difference from the bottom up- but it isn't enough. To succeed, we need your serious commitment from the top down."
Copies will also be given to organisations fighting the same fight, including the Australian Conservation Federation, the Ethos Foundation, the Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre, our friends at Permaculture Noosa, and permaculture originators David Holmgren and Bill Mollison. As their work has informed ours, they should know what we're doing!
Remember, financial members of SustainaBundy are also entitled to one free copy.
With this first annual guide being a very limited edition of only 1000 copies, The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide may very well end up being a local collector's item. Many thanks to the people who have already purchased nearly 100 copies, before the guidebook has even officially been released - we are very grateful for your support.

Congratulations to all concerned on the guide release!! What a great job you've all done. I picked up 4 copies from BMRG and have shared them around with others and have sent one down to Sydney at the request of family.

re: Sweet release: The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide
Hey Rubyglow, thank you so much for the kind words and for buying four copies of the guide from BMRG!! Thanks as well for your article and photos on the recycled food garden, it is a great contribution to the guide and really shows just how much you can accomplish with some creative thinking and very little money! (everyone, see page 83 in the guide for Rubyglow's excellent work!)
Today Dean picked up our got local? stickers, which will be available for sale on Saturday at the movie fest too- they really look great, and already they're working! Classic Design and Print on Electra Street printed the stickers for us, and upon seeing "sustainabundy.org" on the stickers they were curious enough to look it up to see what we're all about- I think these stickers will really raise SustainaBundy's profile around town and get people talking... and asking the places they shop, "Got local? No? Why not?"
Speaking of the website, we now have an official landing page at sustainabundy.org to help new visitors quickly and easily learn about us and visit us, everywhere we pop up on the web!

Re: Got Local??
That's great to hear, Rubyglow, I hope all SustainaBundy members are
doing the same to show their support and get the word out about what
we're trying to achieve. We'll only be successful if everyone chips in!

Re: Sweet release: The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide
Hello Andy,
Well done with the guide! Can I buy 50 copies @$2 each off you to give away in my store? I realise it is probably better if people show a committment and buy them for themselves, but this is an important local document.
Cheers. David

Re: Sweet release: The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide
Hi David- absolutely you can buy 50 copies - and thank you for the commitment that shows on your part. I would ask one favour: that you give your staff some background on the guide and SustainaBundy so that if customers ask "what's this?" the staff don't say, "I dunno. But it's free." The biggest goal with this publication is to raise awareness, and having it available for free at the Good Guys is an excellent way to reach every day Bundabergers... if it is actually read. I'll contact you offlist to set up a time to bring them by.
If other business owners on this discussion list would like to do the same - pre-purchase the guide, tell your staff about it and give it away in your place of business - please don't hesitate to contact us. We'll publicise a list of pickup locations later.
Cheers,
Andi
