Welcome from John D.

Welcome to our new Post Carbon Marin forum.

I am one of the co-creators of this forum (with Andre Angelantoni, who has done the spade work in creating the site). I teach in the Communications Department of Dominican University in San Rafael, and am currently pursuing PhD work on the topic of "community response to peak oil". Andre and I want to create a hub for discussion and debate, but more importantly for activist organizing, to help prepare the community where we and our family and friends reside for some very challenging times.

The ultimate effects of climate change may not be known for decades, but the severe economic and political dislocations resulting from oil and natural gas depletion will be evident in a few short years. It is time for us all to face the fact that we must change the way we live, both individually and collectively, and that we must begin today. Organization and education on the level of the town, neighborhood and household must commence without further delay.

We stand against powerful social, economic and political forces. But most of all, we stand against the complacency and ignorance that allow us to expect that life will go on as it always has. Andre and I give birth to this forum in the hope that it will help us to share our encounters with many hard realities, but that in doing so we may take the first steps towards creating a world of greater responsibility, economic justice, and ecological sustainability for the future.

new member - what to do

I joined this group after attending a presentation by Richard Heinberg. I sent emails with summary of his message (s) to many friends and all I got back from them is 'don't be so negative' and 'there is nothing we can do about it' (so let's ignore it). Need to work to not only educate people on the issues but empower them to do something about it.

Re: new member - what to do

Hi
I'm new to this group too,

Its hard for people to come to terms with the deeper meanings of
resource scarcity. Providing positive responses for people to take is
so important, education is only part of the problem. Its a hard
conversion to have, I've talked with my friends and family about it and
get a variety of responses, but it doesn't have to be negative.

Pull the Ostridge heads up gently, and give them information thats easy
to integrate in their daily lives How can we empower them, and help
them educate others, if they are too scared to act.

Really interested in hearing what the perspective is in your area

Re: new member - what to do

Hi, Kriket and Mack.

Personally, I try to get people in one of my presentations so that they get the full picture because I've had that experience too. If people even get it, they often say it's pointless, which certainly isn't an opinion I hold.
I'm going to test the attachment feature of our fancy new email system (thanks Mack!) by sending you the presentation I give now. I delivered this one at the Environmental Forum of Marin a couple Saturdays ago.
I structure the task ahead of us in the form of a game. Check it out and let me know what you think.
P.S. Mack, what is the size limit to attachments for the email system?

P.S. Mack, what is the size limit to attachments for the email system?
should be 2MB for regular group users, and 5MB for group coordinators,
and you can upload files of the types :
jpg jpeg gif png txt html doc xls pdf ppt pps odt ods odp

You can send them as attachments from mail, or you can post them through
the web
